ABOUT LAB GROWN DIAMOND

These days, lab-grown diamonds are gaining popularity in the global luxury market as more celebrities are spotted wearing lab-grown diamond jewellery on the red carpet. However, for those who are new to lab-grown diamonds, they often have a few questions in mind: What is the difference between mined diamonds and lab-grown diamonds? Are lab-grown diamonds real? Why should I buy a lab-grown diamond?

Lab-grown Diamonds vs. Natural Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, and they are identical to natural mined diamonds, as they share essentially the same chemical composition, and physical and optical properties as their natural counterparts. Even a professionally trained gemologist or skilled jeweller cannot distinguish between a lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond solely by sight.

What is the difference between then?

The only difference is that lab-grown diamonds were created in a laboratory via chemical processes by simulating the natural geological processes that happen deep beneath the Earth’s crust where diamonds are naturally formed, with a combination of intense heat and pressure or through the use of a chemical vapour deposition. Lab-grown diamonds can be created in the laboratory in just a matter of weeks, which is comparatively a much shorter period of time as it takes millions or even billions of years to form a natural diamond in the Earth.

Lab-grown diamonds ≠ Cubic Zirconia

Whilst not everyone knows the difference between mined diamonds and lab-grown diamonds, some people might confuse lab-grown diamonds with cubic zirconia as it looks very much like diamonds. But in fact, cubic zirconia has very different chemical and physical properties that can easily be identified by gemologists. Cubic zirconia is made from synthetic zirconium dioxide, whilst both natural and lab-grown diamonds are composed of pure crystalline carbon.
